Two stages
Peri-implant mucositis
Inflammation of the gum around the implant, without bone loss. Usually reversible with thorough cleaning.
Peri-implantitis
Inflammation that has caused loss of the supporting bone. Needs specialist treatment and tends to progress if left alone.
What increases the risk
- A history of gum disease
- Plaque build-up, or a crown shape that is hard to clean under
- Leftover cement under a cemented crown
- Smoking
- Missing regular maintenance visits
How we treat it
- 01
Assessment
Measuring the gum around the implant and X-rays to see the bone level. Bring any records you have — implant brand, size and past X-rays help.
- 02
Non-surgical cleaning
Decontaminating the implant surface and removing any cement. If the crown is hard to clean, we work with your dentist to adjust it.
- 03
Surgery, where needed
For peri-implantitis, surgical access to clean the implant and, in suitable cases, rebuild bone. Occasionally an implant can't be saved and is better removed and replaced.
- 04
Maintenance
Regular reviews to keep the area stable.
Common questions
My implant was placed overseas. Can you help?
Yes. Bring whatever documents you have. If the implant brand is unknown, X-rays can often identify the system.
It doesn't hurt — should I still come in?
Yes. Like gum disease, implant problems are often painless until advanced. Bleeding around an implant is worth checking.
Will I lose the implant?
Many implants can be kept, especially when treated early. Your assessment will give you a realistic outlook and options.
